According to FIFA, Real Madrid are the greatest club of the 20th century. Founded on 6 March 1902, Real first played in the Spanish top flight in 1928, and have never been relegated. The ‘Merengue’s greatest triumphs include nine European Cup/UEFA Champions League titles (1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1966, 1998, 2000 and 2002) and three World Club Championships (1960, 1998 and 2002). They have also won the Spanish League title on 30 occasions.

Founded in 1912, Santos, who hail from Rio de Janeiro, were the first Brazilian club to win the Intercontinental Cup, the tournament now known as the World Club Championship. Santos won the title in 1962, and went on to retain it the following year. They were also the club at which Pele emerged and established himself as the greatest player of all time. Santos have won the Brazilian league title twice, in 2002 and 2004.
